Y’know those local newsletters you often find in coffee shops and book stores and fast food restaurants and the like? The single sheet ones, that feature a few (usually bad) jokes, a fluff news piece or two, a horoscope, and maybe a trivia game, but are mostly a way for local businesses to advertise on the cheap?
There used to be two competing ones in Halifax: Coffee News, and Flying Cow. I once heard a rumour that things got so heated, one of them was caught straight-up stealing stories from the other one. I have no idea if that’s true, but it tickles me to believe it is, so it’s my head canon now.
Anyway, it appears that Flying Cow won the battle of the local newsletters, as I haven’t seen a Coffee News in years. Something else that tickles me is that, while it may be gone, Coffee News is forever memorialized in my world, as it’s the source of today’s quote.
Experience is what you get when you don’t get what you want.
Seems an appropriate quote to associate with a shuttered publication. I’m guessing they’d rather have won the local newsletter war, but I’m sure they at the very least gained some experience along the way.
