One thing I’ve noticed as I look back through my quote book systematically, instead of flipping to a random page from time-to-time, is that when I first started this project, most of the quotes I collected came from friends. Sometimes – the best times – were when friends would riff off of each other, and I’d get more than one quote in a go.
That’s what happened here. I was at work one day, chatting with a couple of people, when my friend Peter, in what would become his second appearance in the quote book, said:
I’m getting deja vu and amnesia at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.
Pretty sure I squealed when I heard that. Definitely remember saying, “That’s going in the quote book!” as had already become my tradition when I found a keeper. Can still see the smile on Peter’s face as I scrabbled around for a scrap of paper and a pen.
The other thing I can remember is J’s quizzical reaction. J was the third member of our conversation, and unlike Peter, he’d never heard of the quote book before. I explained it to him as I scribbled down Peter’s words, and without missing a beat, J said:
I’d give you some of my quotes, but I don’t have any.
I couldn’t let that one pass by, so I told J, “You do now!” Which, based on the grin he gave me, was exactly what he was going for.
It’s nice when friends embrace your hobbies.
