I used to work with a Princess.
Not the bad kind of Princess. The good kind. The kind that’s caring and generous and supportive, but has a clear line in the sand when it comes to What She’ll Do vs. What Other People Should Do For Her.
I also used to work with a Bitch.
Not the bad kind of Bitch. The good kind. The kind that’s caring and generous and supportive, but her clear line in the sand is way further along the beach than the Princess’s is.

The Princess was the kind of person who would mention that she’d run out of windshield washer fluid on her way to work that morning, and next thing I knew, I’d be under the hood filling up the reservoir. She never asked me to do it, and she never would. I just wanted to, because that’s the sort of thing you do for Princesses.
The only way I’d find out that the Bitch had run out of windshield washer fluid, meanwhile, was when I saw her with her head stuck under the hood. And my only reaction would be to ask if whatever the problem was required a second set of hands. Because that’s the sort of thing you do for Bitches.
Now me? I’ve got more Bitch in me than Princess.
So a certain Bitch camaraderie built up over the years. I can’t remember the last time either of us called the other by name. We’ve been ‘Bitch’ – or more often ‘B’ since we worked with the public and had to watch our language – for as long as I can remember. And when we all still worked together, there was the occasional bit of good natured teasing of the Princess, as well.
This culminated in the day I heard this wafting across the workplace:
Bitch, Princess is being a queen!
I don’t remember the context. But I do remember the tone of Bitch’s voice, and Princess’s laugh in reply.
When I came to this quote in the book, I couldn’t figure out what I was going to say about it. “You had to be there,” stories aren’t engaging, nor are ones where you really need to know the people involved to get the full effect.
But after revisiting this fun memory from a happy time, I can say this: The world is full of Princesses and Bitches of all kinds. May you always be surrounded with the caring and generous and supportive ones.
